About Nicholas BauchI am a conceptual artist driven by ideas emergent from cultural and urban geography.&nbsp; Specifically, I create systems that ignite my own ways of being in and with landscapes, drawing attention to the built form of human activity (economy, for example), or animacies that are felt, but just out of sight.&nbsp; At the core of my artistic life is re-mediation, which, as I am using it, is when an expression of something becomes expressed in a different medium.&nbsp; My art involves the challenges and joys of designing ephemeral activities, then collecting their residues to share with others in a way that inspires new pathways of thinking for all involved.&nbsp; One characteristic of re-mediation is that it is always incomplete; it is never meant to capture the entirety of the system I make for myself. &nbsp;In my art I use instruments as tools for being with landscapes.&nbsp; I hold an M.F.A. in Visual Art from the University of Minnesota (2021), and a Ph.D. in Geography from U.C.L.A. You are invited to propose a performance based on a fragment from the years 300 - 1000 CE. Here, fragment is defined as (noun) "a small part broken or separated off something" OR (verb) "to break or cause to break into fragments." The years 300 - 1000 have been arbitrarily chosen to represent a swath of the early medieval period/"Dark Ages." While the material record from the period is rich, it is also filled with shards, ruins, objects intentionally and unintentionally destroyed or defaced, and incomplete texts. Performances can be in any medium. Examples include dance, recitation/reading, short play, song, lecture, science experiment, game, etc. If you cannot be physically present at Pancake House in Minneapolis to perform your piece, you may document your performance on video to be shown virtually. Now abandoned by the 1980s due to pollution from the nearby taconite plant, the town is now only recognizable by a lone street lamp, a few leftover curbs, and several fragmented house foundations. This reliquary box pays homage to artifacts collected by religious pilgrims in the medieval era via 12 found objects gathered at the suburban Bloomington (MN) IKEA. The boxes allowed travellers to access their devotional experiences by interacting with these blessed materials after their journeys ended. Crocker and Michael Legan. Naomi E. Crocker is a Minneapolis-based artist, whose work explores the boundaries between seemingly-disparate disciplines. She is drawn to acts of facilitation, but also utilizes performance, sculpture, sound, installation, and text-based practices. Naomi’s projects often consider humanity's relationship with language (oral, written &amp; gestural) and she is frequently inspired by linguistic histories, processes, and structures. Naomi holds a B.A. in Linguistics, an M.A. in Second Languages &amp; Cultures Education, and works as both an independent researcher and administrator primarily within museums and cultural organizations. Michael Legan is a sound artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Michael’s work has been featured at the Cleveland International Film Festival, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Film Festival, PBS, Guthrie Theater, Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, and the screening room of the New York Public Library’s Performing Arts Branch. His sound installations have been exhibited at the Walker Art Center’s summer series of Sensory Friendly Sundays, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Glass House, and at the Material Art Fair in Mexico City, Mexico. Michael holds a BA in Global Studies from the University of Minnesota. Sophie Durbin is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and researcher based in Minneapolis. She directs programming at Pancake House, a small multipurpose art space. Her work blends artistic inquiry with academic research and focuses on the relationship between the distant past and the contemporary world, with a current focus on the early medieval period. In the institution’s vision, the body should be understood as a valuable archive of information that can reorient our understanding of knowledge production and the writing of history, and allow us to prioritize care and mutual aid in a proposed future after the Capitalocene. In this storefront window installation, the viewer is offered a glimpse into a Center For Post-Capitalist History Staging Area, suggesting that the intentional construction of our future is something occurring in the present. Leah Sandler is an interdisciplinary artist and writer based in Orlando, Florida. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Rollins College in 2014 and a Master of Fine Arts from University of the Arts in 2017. Recent exhibitions include the 2020 Florida Biennial, Interstice at MOTOR Los Angeles, CA, and Utopian/Vermilion, a solo exhibition at ParkHaus15 in Orlando, FL. Sandler’s writing and projects have been featured in publications including Salat Magazin, SPECS Journal, and Mapping Meaning Journal. She is the author of The Center For Post-Capitalist History’s Field Guide to Embodied Archiving, available in September 2021 through Burrow Press. Watching the decline of capitalism from the sand pine scrub and urban sprawl of Orlando Florida, I construct parafictional worlds through mediums including video, text, drawing, flag making, and collaborative interdisciplinary projects. These parafictions flesh out imagined post-capitalist institutions, rituals, histories, manifestos, and landscapes. It appears in found footage as a harbinger of patriotic camp and hypermasculine overcompensation. It is also a weapon and a warning, signifying imperialism, war, and “Freedom.” The eagle reminds us of the troubled American conservation movement of which Roosevelt was a figurehead, which cast aside Indigenous land management practices to construct and preserve a mythical wilderness. Of course, the eagle did not ask to bear this weight. It is also a formerly endangered animal that you may see for yourself as you embark on Curran’s self-guided tour. Curran walks us through a place that eagles call home -- 73 eagle nests reside along the portion of the Mississippi River that flows through the Twin Cities. On this tour we encounter eagles re-inscribed across the landscape in ways both mundane and macabre, from an eagle decoration topping a mortuary to an account of animal cruelty at the ghostly former site of Longfellow Zoological Gardens. Coupled with the window installation, this tour offers viewers a contemporary meditation on the eagle’s symbolism as well as its material presence. Artist Statement A mature bald eagle weighs 14 pounds. But in this nation, an eagle is a heavy being, overburdened with symbolic meaning—its likeness adorns pistol grips and presidential podiums. At the same time, chemical contaminants from nearby industrial dumping sites leach into the bloodstream of eagles nesting along the Mississippi River. Plumage addresses both our adoration of the eagle and the desecration of its habitat. A video installation in Pancake House’s storefront window combines found YouTube clips with text from a 1908 speech from Teddy Roosevelt entitled “Conservation as a National Duty.” Visitors are also invited on a self-guided, 1.5 mile-long walking tour that notices the natural history of eagles and the particular ways they are embedded in the local landscape. Bio Mike Curran grew up in Portland, Maine, and now lives in the Twin Cities. He received his B.A. in Geography from Macalester College in 2018. His work often involves sifting through the waste of the Anthropocene to deconstruct dominant cultural symbols and our frayed connection with the natural world. Recent projects have used satellite imagery to explore the relationship between golf courses and prisons, and hacked surveillance footage to better understand contemporary American landscapes. Beyond his individual practice, he produces shows at Normal Residential Purposes, and works in habitat restoration along the Mississippi River. His arts writing has been published in TEMP/reviews.
